We have been witness in recent weeks to “yet-another” well-known personality becoming a fallen hero. In this case, it is a spokesperson exposed for improper conduct and unthinkable crimes against minors. Most, who truly only know the public persona of the person, have been shocked and amazed at the news – think about the person’s own family. From what we publicly know, there is multiple family relationships that have been forever destroyed. And why shouldn’t we be shocked? There was no prior indication that this type of behavior was a concern – certainly, if there had been, we wouldn’t even be aware of the story of weight loss and choosing healthy options thru a sandwich shop.
I have been in a few conversations with various people talking about how awful it is that this person committed these acts, how terrible this all is for the victims and the family, what a tough spot this is for the business affected. Indeed all of these things are true. But the issue not making the conversation circuit in the main stream media, not to detract from the true victims of these crimes, is that society has once again put up a human being, a flawed person, a sinner like you and me in the spotlight and expected perfection. This is not to say all public personalities are flawed in the same way or even should be the subject of scrutiny for these types of recently reported crimes. But this situation and others should remind us that we so often are looking to the wrong person to emulate, to look up to, to mimic in some way. Christ is the one to emulate, to look up to, to follow and study. Not, some celebrity’s recent hair style or recent crazy tweet or seductive magazine cover. Human beings are incredible creatures – there are certainly traits and creative works that we should / can absorb, consider and allow to influence us – but it should all be done for the right reason. Adults and youth alike are easily influenced – guarding ourselves against overexposure of the perceived perfection of celebrities, movie characters and like will serve us well.
My prayers are with the victims, the sinner and all those affected in this case and others like it for healing and God’s peace. We have once again been shown what evil is, the devil is out there and is really good at what he does – prayers for us all to stand firm, to be ever vigilant of our souls and to be looking to the one true Hero who not even death could defeat.
